"Tsunami of Care" Week for Japan Begins

Yesterday began our week of giving back with our "Tsunami of Care" week where we will donate 5% of our sales to disaster assistance in Japan. Our beginning tally for Sunday was $42 and will keep growing. In the news this morning, the Fukushima nuclear plant continues to spiral downward towards a partial or complete meltdown. It is unthinkable that a large part of northern Japan could be uninhabitable for years. The plight of the victims of the earthquake and tsunami seems to be overshadowed by this.

We will be sending our money to Presbyterian Disaster Assistance, the disaster arm of my denomination. PDA goes into an area immediately after the disaster and sets up camps where volunteers can live and work to help in the long term recovery on an area. I, personally, have been on trips to Louisiana to help rebuild homes for Katrina victims and to West Virginia to help a family rebuild their trailer on higher ground, after it had been destroyed in flooding. I have seen where the money given to PDA goes.

From the Beach to the Arctic - An Overview of Our First Trade Show

Well, we just got back from our first trade show. The show was The Grand Strand Gift and Resort Merchandise Show in Myrtle Beach, SC. Along with my wife and son, along came my office manager, Patti, and her family or husband and two kids. Resort hotel rooms are CHEAP this time of year because of the sheer number of rooms available and no people. Supply and demand. There were several heated pools, hot tub, lazy river... so we stayed wet when we were not at the show. We had a great time and learned alot!

Mainly we were looking to add new suppliers for our Beach Chair line. We talked to several companies, got to see and touch the chairs and met some nice folks. What did we learn? First off, most beach chairs come from China. Secondly, there are production issues in China today. Thirdly, you need to order early to get the best selection and quantity available. Production problems stem from many sources. The global recession has reduced the capacity because less demand has required many workers to return to their villages to grow food - the government is encouraging that. New environmental regulations to clean up the air and water has forced power plants to cut back on power production. This means that importers need to order early to get the product they want. We are in the process of placing our orders in order to bring you the best products at the best prices. We will be expanding the Rio Beach line and also adding the Copa brand out of Miami, FL. We also will be adding to our selection of Hammocks and Hanging Chairs from this trip.

I am looking forward to attending other trade shows for the many different products that we offer. It is fun, educational AND tax deductible!

STADIUM / BLEACHER SEATS BUYING GUIDE
Friday Night Lights in COMFORT

Our high school football team is doing pretty good this year. Not as good as last year when they went to the state championship. That was a thrill to go to Chapel Hill and watch them in the UNC Tar Heels stadium. Unfortunately, they ran up against a brick wall with their opponent. They lost the final game last year and were not about to do that again. Anyways, this piece is about enjoying the game in your bleacher seat. Here are some of my observations.

Your first decision will be which style of seat: a soft seat with no rigid frame except for back stiffeners, or a seat with a metal frame. Soft seats will cradle your back, usually have less padding, but are easier and lighter to carry. They also are good for sitting on the ground for camping, in front of the TV, or anywhere else you just need some back support. Internal frame seats are little bulkier, but give good back support for leaning back (without ending up in the lap of the person behind you!).

The second thing to look for is padding (those bleachers are hard!). Look for at least one inch of foam padding. Most of the soft seats have less padding, but can still be comfortable. Back padding is optional, most frame seats have stretched fabric which is more than adequate.

Thirdly, look for how it attaches to the bleacher. Frame seats MUST have a heavy duty web strap that is joined securely, preferably with a plastic buckle and not velcro. You are going to want to lean back to varying degrees, so this is important. You can easily tear out the straps in poorly designed seats.

Finally, what type of pockets are available for stashing your game gear? Soft seats win out here with fold out flaps filled with zippers, cell phone holders, mesh pockets... enough to bring the kitchen sink to the game. Usually frame seats have a large pocket on the reverse of the back. Be careful here, since these usually do not have closures and things can fall out when walking to the game. That brings up one more point, how will you carry it? Look for a strap that can be removed and a hand carry handle comes in handy, too.

My recommendations for soft seats are as follows:

The Stadium Seat with Storage by TravelChair has a ton of storage. It is well made, lightweight and easy to use.

Crazy Creek makes soft seat for camping, but these will work fine for in the stadium. These are ultra padded and lightweight and tough.

As far as frame seats:

The Bleacher Back Seat by GCI Outdoor is my favorite seat to take to the games. It is very comfortable, perfect for reclining and comes in many different colors. When you are ready to go, just pull up on the strap, it folds and throw it over your shoulder.

It Feels Like Fall Is In The Air

Here in the mountains of North Carolina we get a taste of fall before the folks in lower elevations. It is a great time to be outside with the lower temperatures and the beauty of the season. It is a great time to ride my bicycle, too. For the past 3 years, I have taken part on the Cycle NC Ride Across North Carolina. About 1000 riders take part in this annual trek across the state, taking 7 days to go from the mountains to the sea. This year we are starting at the magnificent Biltmore Estate in Asheville and going to Ocean Isle Beach. It is a supported ride, in that we are allowed two bags of no more than 40 lbs each which are loaded on to trucks in the morning and then dumped at the next campsite. It is not the perfect system, but is sure beats carrying your own gear!

Of course, everyone needs a portable chair for sitting around camp at night, and this presents a problem of finding a chair small enough to fit in my bags and lightweight. This year, I have narrowed it down to a chair from GCI Outdoor with their patented Telescoping Technology. These are not minimalist chairs that you barely can fit your butt in, but medium to full size chairs with backs and armrests. The legs ingeniously telescope into themselves to reduce the size by half when folded.

My favorite, and the one I am going to take with me on the ride, will be the Pico Compact Telescoping Arm Chair by GCI Outdoor. 3 Ways to Beat the Heat During the Scorcher Summer of 2010

Well, it is official. June 2010 was the hottest month on record for many cities in the US. As I write this, we are in the midst of another stretch of stiffling and dangerous heat with the temperature forecast to hit the high 90's for our town high in the usually cool Blue Ridge Mountains. Crazy, is't it? After a winter that broke the records for snow and cold, we are at the other end of the spectrum. If this keeps up, July and August will be like taking a trip to the underworld.

What is a person to do?

Well, I have been thinking of ways to cool off and have come up with a list of 3 ways to attempt to enjoy (or at least survive) the heat. Here goes:

Go Quickly to the Nearest Body of Water: Even if it is your bathtub, there is always a way to immerse yourself in something wet. Where I live, we are blessed with cool, mountain streams. My favorite thing to do with friends is to take the Lazy Dayz Floating Tube with Cooler & Cupholder by Swimways to the river and get dropped off upstream. Then, we all float to our favorite swimming hole where we make use of the built in cooler. Most towns have a local pool where you can go and just float around in one of our many Pool Floats. Go after work when the kids have worn themselves out and it is a little less chaotic.
Spray Yourself: Everyone has a hose. Take time out for an old fashioned family water fight. Take turns passing the hose around so everyone has a chance to be sprayer and sprayee. Purchase one of the garden sprayers that have multiple spray settings. You can switch easily to the spray that is needed at the time; Jet Spray for long distance, Cone Spray full body coverage, etc. If all that running around is not for you - then set up something like our Kelsyus MESH Portable Backpack Hammock with Stand, or for bigger folks Kelsyus XL Big and Tall Portable Backpack Hammock with Stand, or any or our Hammocks & Hanging Chairs. Next, attach the sprayer on Mist above you to a post or tree and then lay there in misted heaven. One caveat: Reading is not an option, books get soggy and Kindles tend to short circuit.
Head for Air-Conditioning: Go to a library, movie, restaurant, mall or anywhere that they tend to turn up the air conditioning to entice people in the door. I have found convenience stores usually have the AC turned up to near freezer temperatures. Get an Icee while you are there. The only problem is that the seating in these places are usually not that comfortable. Just take along one of our ultra portable chairs, find a corner and have a seat. How To Purchase and Replace Directors Chair Covers

The amazing thing about Director's Chairs is that they can last forever! I have many people call us quite often saying that they have purchased a Gold Medal Directors Chair from a yard or estate sale and it needs new canvas. Well, the amazing thing is that Gold Medal started making Directors Chairs in 1892. In fact, at the 1892 World's Fair Exposition in Chicago, the Gold Medal Classic chair was awarded a medal for "Excellence in Casual Furniture Design." Today, this Gold Medal tradition is carried on by TLT Incorporated. So, that brings us back to the fact that there are alot of old, but perfectly serviceable and attractive, directors chairs out there that need new replacement canvas. I will talk a little about how to find the right canvas replacement, and how to install it.

Let me say in the beginning that there is no standard for directors chair replacement covers. It is not like nuts and bolts with standard measurements. Manufacturers have made wide and narrow chairs, tall and short backs, etc. Don't despair though, I have found that 95% of the chairs out there use a couple of sizes available today.

The first thing you might want to check is if there is a manufacturer brand name stamped on the chair somewhere. A common place to look is under the arm rests. Or there might be a metal plate attached to the legs or seat rail. If you are able to find this, then you can do a search for the manufacturer and see if they sell replacements.

Then, you need to know if you are looking for a Flat Stick or a Round Stick type canvas. I have drawings below showing how the canvas attaches into the seat rail. The flat stick seat fabric is normally wider than the round stick, because the sticks set into the outside edge of the seat rail. One trick I have found is that if you have a wider round stick chair, you can buy the flat stick and just change out the sticks. If you don't have the round sticks, just go to the hardware store or Wal-Mart and purchase a wooden dowell slightly smaller than the slot and cut it a little shorter than the canvas (so it does not go past the seams).

Next, you need to know the dimensions of the canvas you are looking for. If you have the old fabric, then it is easy to measure the seat and back canvas. Lay them out flat, pressing down flat the loops on the back canvas, and measure the two dimensions. Include the area for the sticks, just measure from edge to edge. But be careful here, because that well worn fabric has probably stretched over time.
If you don't have the fabric, then it will take two people to do the measurement. Open the chair frame and lock the brace on the legs. Have one person push the two seat rails together with medium force, and then measure to the outside of the slots. For round stick canvas, you will add about an inch to account for the two stick loops.

Now that you are armed the measurements, you can search online for a retailer of replacement directors chair fabric. In addition, they make a synthetic mesh directors chair seat and back, which is perfect for outdoor pool use. Telescope also manufacturers a padded directors chair cover, as well as a marine theme directors chair replacement canvas.

The dimensions should be listed on the website, if not call customer service. If the operator does not know the dimensions, or worse yet, if they tell you that theirs will fit all directors chairs, then RUN AWAY! They don't know their products or chairs and probably will not take the item back should it not fit. So, ask about the return policy in case you have to send it back. As long as it is in new condition, there should NOT be any restocking fees, these are very easy to resell (also, please cut the plastic bag with a scissor, so it can be taped back without notice). If the dimensions you have measured are not exactly what they have, don't worry, it only has to be close, say +/- one inch. That applies mainly to the seat canvas width, which determines if you will be able to open the chair (too narrow) or the fabric will sag too much and possibly come out when sat in (too wide).

So go ahead and order the directors chair replacement set (it will include the seat and back canvas and the sticks) and start thinking about where you are going to put your handsome new directors chairs. This might also be a good time to refinish the chair frame. If you do, be careful not to put finish in the slots where the canvas will go. When your package arrives, check your order for accuracy and then get the chairs ready for new canvas.

Open the chair frame about half way open so you have slack to put the canvas on. Put the seat on first - by inserting the sticks in the fabric. Then, slide the seat evenly on both sides into the seat rail slot. Even up the front of the canvas with the chair front. If it is hard to go in, check that the sticks are not past the seams, if so, then cut the sticks off just inside the seams. You might have to get a smaller dowell (remember, the hardware store has these) if it is too large with the fabric. Once you have the seat in, slide the back canvas over the posts and leave about a half inch of post at the top. Next, open the chair all the way, pushing apart the seat rails, and then STEP ON THE BRACES TO PUSH THEM DOWN AND LOCK THEM INTO PLACE. I emphasize this because I get so many calls where the customer says the seat is too small, but in reality the chair is made so that the seat fabric locks the braces into place and everything is in tension. That is how you want the chair to be. The back will pull the armrests in so that they push down hard on the seat rails, keeping the canvas from coming out of the slots. You don't want the canvas coming out of the slot, or you will be on the ground. It also will most likely rip at the seams if the seat is not taunt.

So, there you have it. Replacing the canvas on your directors chairs is a great way to be eco friendly, by reusing rather than discarding. Old chair frames can be found on Ebay, yard sales, estate sales, etc. When you find a frame, be sure that the joints are solid - that is the first place where a director chair will show wear. It won't be long before you are swaying back and forth, not good when you are in a tall directors chair, 30" off the ground. Good luck on refurbishing those old chairs and call me, the "Chairman", any time if you have questions.

Ultra Small and Light Chairs for your Cruise

It has been quite a winter here up in the mountains of western NC! It also happened to be the 20th wedding anniversary for my wife and me. Well, actually, the date is in mid summer, so we decided to celebrate early in mid winter with a 7 day cruise out of San Juan, PR. The boat would stop almost every day at 5 different islands that week, so I started doing research on things to do and beaches to visit on each island. As I quickly found out, beach chair rentals at these various beaches were not cheap. Well, when you have a captive audience on the island of anywhere from 3500 to 15000 people from the cruise ships, the concessionairs have the upper hand. Being "The Chairman" of a website selling the most variety of portable folding chairs on the internet, I knew there was a better way. I started looking at which chairs might be suitable to take along on our cruise. Here are my findings.

My first chair I reviewed was Rio Padded Beach Mat / Lounger
At $20 this looked like a good choice. First requirement was that it would fit in our luggage and at 22" square and only 2" deep, it would lay flat on the top. The 7 lbs weight was a little heavy, especially if I was to take two and with the 50 lb. bag limit for the airlines (surcharge was $15 per bag and it went up to $49 for an over weight bag!) So, I would probably have to put these in another suitcase with beach and snorkeling stuff, which was fine. The Beach Mat / Lounger tri folds together and secures with velcro and has a strap for carrying over your shoulder. When unfolded, the backrest is adjustable by a buckle strap and worked well at different angles. The mat portion has a vinyl layer that would keep you dry in wet sand. It was a little hard trying it out on the concrete floor, but I could just imagine the warm, soft, tropical sand. That would be just fine.

I rate this chair high on comfort and portability, but the weight might be a concern for some people.

The next guinea pig was the WondaWedge Inflatable Back Support

This chair, as the name says, is inflatable. Of course, that means that it fits in a small plastic bag uninflated and weighs almost nothing. I knew I would not have a pump with me, so the first concern was how long and hard would it be to blow it up. I began huffing and puffing, and was surprised that it only took about twenty full breaths to fully inflate the support. I took it slow so I wouldn't get dizzy, though with a few rum punches under my belt on the beach, I might not even notice it. I laid it out on the floor and tried a few different positons. It worked well and was more cushiony than the Beach Lounger, though I missed the different positions. The mat part of this chair also is waterproof and was a little more fuzzy, softer. To uninflate it, as most people know that have the inflatable beds, was not easy to get all the air out so it would go back in the bag.

This chair was high on the list because of it's small size and light weight.

Finally, the last chair I tested was the The Xpress Camp Chair by GCI Outdoor

This is more of a traditional chair, but with some technological improvements. Telescoping Technology from GCI allows the bottom section of the legs to slide into the top, effectively making the folded chair half the size of a normal folded chair, only 17" square by 2" deep. At 5 lbs. it is relatively light and comes with a shoulder strap. It is easy to set up and would allow me to relax on the beach, but not really lounge. I think this one would be great for an older person maybe that does not want to recline so much, but sit and stare out at the beautiful sea. On another note, this chair would be great for motorcyclists, since it is small and you are not backpacking it. GCI makes several different chairs with this telescoping technology. Greetings and welcome to the newly designed EverywhereChair.com with our newest addition - A Blog! A webstore can be impersonal certainly, so I look forward to letting our customers know what's new here, from new products to big events in our business to personal observations.

If you have been here before, you will notice our new store design (which had not changed since we opened in 2001). We contracted 1choice4yourstore.com for the redesign, and are very pleased with the results. We are still a Yahoo store, but upgraded to their Merchant Solutions platform. It will allow us to more efficiently manage our inventory, add many more new, exciting products and just be a little easier to navigate and use as well as pleasing to the eye. Look for new additions in all of our categories of directors chairs, beach chairs, backpack chairs, camping chairs, portable stools, concert chairs and hammocks and more.
On top of this, we just moved into our new office/warehouse in September after 6 months of construction. We acted as the general contractors ourselves, which was rewarding as well as a bit stressful. Our property is close to town, but off the main highway, and was a Paintball Field in it's former life. My son had a paintball birthday party here 2 years ago, and little did we know then that we would someday be processing orders where we were shooting each other that day. We will be having our Grand Opening on Nov. 22nd, so if you live near Burnsville, NC... Welcome!
